Sector Specific Training for the Food Service Industry

Kitchen Sage officially became a Workforce Development initiative of Steepletown in the summer of 2016.   The primary focus of Kitchen Sage is the Culinary Leadership Academy, which provides employment training for those interested in the food service industries.   The Culinary Leadership Academy begins with a six week core learning session that culminates in students taking the ServSafe Manager Certification exam.  The ServeSafe Manager Certification is a nationally recognized credential with the Department of Labor.  Upon successful completion of the core learning session, additional training continues at one of Kitchen Sage’s many partners with a paid externship.  The ultimate goal is for the student to gain meaningful employment in this industry.

  • Kitchen Sage is a proprietary school unit, licensed with the State of Michigan.
  • The Culinary Leadership Academy is offered through Kitchen Sage
  • Kitchen Sage is under the leadership of Chefs Tommy FitzGerald, Justin Stermin, and Karen Chaffee.
  • Kitchen Sage is located in the lower level of the Basilica Center, 654 Davis Avenue NW, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  (Across the street from the Steepletown Center.)
