Kitchen Sage understands that throughout history, food has brought people together in many different ways. This is the basic wisdom of Kitchen Sage’s training, which is to introduce new and creative talent to the food service and hospitality industries. The foundational training of Kitchen Sage is its culinary leadership academy, which has recently undergone some restructuring due to COVID-19. And truthfully, while not everyone is going to end up as an Executive Chef or owning their own restaurant, we all have to eat!! And so Kitchen Sage also teaches skills that last a lifetime.
Chef Karen Chaffee, the current Director of KitchenSage Training Academy & Preschool Meal Production brings 29 years of culinary experience to the table. She has worked the bulk of her career in restaurants and fine dining, overseeing operations at Senior living communities, and also working as a personal Chef & consultant. These skills and experiences are used to guide aspiring culinarians to learn batch cooking techniques and beginning kitchen etiquette and skills. For her work at Kitchen Sage Chef Karen earned the Culinary Educator of the Year award for greater Grand Rapids in 2017. She currently serves on the Academic Advisory Board for the Culinary Institute of Michigan & recently served as the Diversity Chair for the American Culinary Federation for the past 3 years. When Chef Karen isn’t in the kitchen she enjoys gardening, the outdoors & bee keeping.
